Food & Wine's Editorial Guidelines Published on December 6, 2024 Close Photo: Food & Wine / McDonald's McDonald’s couldn’t have known in 2006 when they launched an unassuming tortilla-wrapped chicken tender that it would burrow so deeply into the hearts, minds, and palates of American consumers, yet the Snack Wrap remains one of the chain’s most beloved releases of the 21st century. Ever since its discontinuation in 2016, fans have begged McDonald’s to bring it back to the menu, and after eight long years of that plea, McDonald’s might just be granting their wish. The chain has teased the return of Snack Wraps on social media, and the response has been explosive. On Thursday, December 5, McDonald’s posted an image to Instagram with the text “snack wraps xx.xx.2025” and the caption “can’t believe i just posted this.” (For the unfamiliar, McDonald’s social media presence fashions itself as a mildly disaffected Gen Z consumer and uses language and capitalization in keeping with that persona.) Just two hours after its initial posting, the post has nearly 33,000 likes and well over 1,400 comments with sentiments like “Don’t lie to me right now” and “Please tell us this is not a drill.” McDonald’s Fans Have Been Clamoring for the Return of This Popular Menu Item — and They Just Might Get It If those reactions sound guarded, it’s because fans have good reason to doubt the good news. While other fast food offerings have caused emotional responses from consumers in the past — see the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich or the Taco Bell Mexican Pizza — nothing compares to the sustained heartbreak of long-suffering McDonald’s devotees who simply wish to see the return of the Snack Wrap, and whose hopes have been repeatedly dashed. In 2022, TikTok videos went viral purporting to show the Snack Wrap’s return to U.S. McDonald’s locations (because, oh yeah, it’s consistently available overseas). Yet these turned out to be dupes, with people special-ordering the wrap at certain franchise locations that happened to have the approximate ingredients on hand. Then, in 2023, McDonald’s answered fans’ demand for a Snack Wrap by kind of, but not really, committing to maybe considering the return of the Snack Wrap in the future. In July 2024, it was revealed that McDonald’s had concluded a test run of Crispy Chicken Tenders in limited markets, which implies that all the elements were now in place to eventually re-release the Snack Wrap. Yet that revelation was followed by months of crickets on the Snack Wrap front. Fans are ready and eager to snap them up. And at some point in 2025, it seems like they’ll finally have the chance. There’s really nothing all that complicated about the Snack Wrap: It’s a crispy chicken tender with lettuce and cheese, plus a choice of sauce, rolled up in a tortilla. But their price point was lower than other entrees and sides on the menu, and it made for an ideal complementary add-on to a wide range of orders. These considerations — value, little treats — matter to people now more than ever, and with McDonald’s chicken business outpacing its beef sales, it’s the perfect time to gain easy accolades by bringing back the Snack Wrap once and for all.
