Temperatures have been soaring across the United States this month, and as of this writing, the National Weather Service says that around 10% of the U.S. population is currently under an excessive heat warning. When it’s this hot outside, the only responsible thing to do is stay inside and eat a giant bowl of freezing cold ice cream.

It’s not just about the scorching temperatures, but Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is suggesting a unique twist for your next cup or cone. The Columbus, Ohio-based ice cream maker has teamed up with Fly By Jing to introduce “Spice Cream,” which combines the sweetness of ice cream with the unmistakable flavor of the internet’s favorite heat source: Fly By Jing’s Sichuan Chili Crisp.

Starting this Thursday, July 11, if you can brave the temperatures to get to one of Jeni’s scoop shops, you can try a Spice Cream combination featuring three flavors of Jeni’s Ice Cream. Each of these limited-edition cones will be filled with scoops of Darkest Chocolate, Salty Caramel, and Double Dough — topped with Sichuan Chili Crisp. And if you’d like to make your own sweet-heat combination, you can also ask for Sichuan Chili Crisp as a topping on the flavor of your choice, for no extra charge.

If you’d rather not step out in the heat, you can easily order the Spice Cream Collection bundle from Jenis.com. This bundle includes a six-ounce jar of Sichuan Chili Crisp, pints of Darkest Chocolate, Salty Caramel, Double Dough, and Honey Vanilla Bean, along with the new Sparkling Cherry Pie flavor. This latest addition to the Jeni’s lineup is a mix of tangy Michigan cherry ice cream, crumbled shortbread pieces, cherry jam, and Sichuan peppercorns. The new Spice Cream bundle is available for just $68.

“I’ve been a Jeni’s superfan for years, so this collab is a dream come true,” Fly By Jing founder Jing Gao said. “The sweet creaminess of ice cream against the savory, crunchy heat of chili crisp will blow your mind and taste buds. My favorite summer dinner party trick is whipping out a couple pints of Jeni’s and a jar of Sichuan Chili Crisp and watch my friends’ eyes light up once they take a bite.”

Gao has been a fan of the now-popular combo for several years, ever since she caught on to a trend in Chongqing and Chengdu in China, where teens were consuming cups of vanilla soft-serve ice cream drizzled with spicy chile oil. She even served the combo at her Sichuan Chili Crisp’s launch party in Los Angeles way back in 2018.

“Your mouth is confused, but your brain is like, ‘More! More!’” she told Food & Wine of the swicy combination at the time.

We’re so ready to freak our taste buds out. Even if it requires leaving the house.
