“It’s a great time to be a small business in Houston,” says Emmanuel Chavez. The 2023 F&W Best New Chef opened Tatemó in 2022 with a wealth of support from the Houston community. Thanks in large part to the city’s exciting pop-ups, the local restaurant industry is experiencing a time of fresh, new ideas. “It nourishes our community with amazing activities and talented individuals who have become the next generation of chefs in our city,” he says. “There’s so much energy and joy being shared. It’s inspiring to see and be a part of it.”

Sharing the joy forward, Chavez lists some of the many amazing Houston restaurants, bars, and markets that he loves to frequent.

Barbecue the Houston way

Feges BBQ has some of the most iconic barbecue our city has ever seen. I love how family-friendly the restaurant has become. The smoked turkey is a must!”

Laminated with love

Koffeteria has the best croissants in the city. I mean, talk about layers of deliciousness. I love the guava pastry — it has become such a classic Saturday pastry for me before I head over to start my day at Tatemó.”

Breakfast banger

Lola serves the best breakfast potatoes and sausage, hands down. You would not know how tasty it is until you go and experience it, but it’s amazing to see such a diverse dining room.”

Most anticipated

“Chef Angelo Emiliani makes the best pizza in town. His soon-to-open pizzeria, Angie’s Pizza, should be on everyone’s radar. It’s truly the best pizza I have ever had. My mouth waters even just thinking about his dough.”

Spirited spirit-free

“I’ve been sober for six years, but Better Luck Tomorrow in the Heights always serves me a delicious mocktail. I love the food and vibe there. Both of the owners, Justin Yu and Bobby Heugel, have been very supportive of our restaurant, and it’s inspiring to see them continue their partnership and grow their hospitality business.”

Wine talk

“Justin Vann from Nancy’s Hustle has the best wine list in town, in my humble opinion. His admiration for affordable wine is really special. Plus, he has the best radio voice ever!”

Michelada o’clock

“Houston is not very patio-friendly — our summers are in the high 90s, and it rains way too often. But when the rare occasion presents itself, Mambo Seafood’s patios with Gulf oysters always hits the spot. Topo Chico micheladas por me, please!”

Fresh and new

“The new and improved version of the Houston Farmers Market is my go-to. The renovation was inspired by Pike Place Market in Seattle, so after living out there for three years, the Houston version definitely hits home.”

All-time fave

Theodore Rex is a staple for date nights. I love how the restaurant has reinvented itself over the years. It’s my favorite place to eat, and I’m always inspired by the team there. It’s delicious and romantic — and I kind of want to work there.”

The secret menu

“I get the Chaparra special at Whataburger. It’s a super special off-the-menu combo sandwich — a patty melt with grilled jalapeños. If I’m feeling frisky, I’ll add a shake.”

Family business

“You go for the food and come back for the people at Dumpling Haus. One of the most iconic mother-daughter teams in our industry. They are definitely the hardest working people.”
