Costco Is Recalling 10,800 Units of Its Kirkland Signature Pasture-Raised Eggs Over Salmonella Concerns

The eggs, which came in 24-count boxes and weren't meant to be sold in stores, "were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging."

If you have purchased eggs from Costco lately, then it's time to check your fridge.

On November 27, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a voluntary recall from Handsome Brook Farms, which is recalling 10,800 retail units of the Organic Pasture-Raised 24-Count Eggs, which it sold under the Kirkland Signature brand name. The eggs, the notice explained, are potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

"The recall was initiated after the company determined that eggs — not intended for retail distribution — were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging," the recall explains. "Additional supply chain controls and retraining are being put in place to prevent recurrence."

These recalled units were distributed to 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee beginning November 22, 2024. According to the notice, the Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture-Raised 24-Count Eggs come with the UPC number 9661910680 and are packaged in plastic egg cartons labeled with "Kirkland Signature" on the top. "The recall only applies to units with the Julian code 327 and a Use By Date of Jan 5, 2025, which can be found printed on the side of the plastic egg carton," it added. "No other products are impacted by this recall."

To date, no illnesses have been reported in conjunction with this recall. However, the FDA added that salmonella can cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems." Typically healthy persons experience "fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain" following an infection. It added, in rare circumstances, "infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis."

If you purchased the recalled eggs, the FDA says you should not consume them and instead return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions can reach out to Handsome Brook Farms directly by calling 646-733-4532 or via recall@hbfeggs.com.

However, this wasn't the only salmonella-related recall to come out in late November. On November 29, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with state and local partners, also announced they are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to American/slicer cucumbers. In that case, 68 people have confirmed infections, 18 of which have been hospitalized. However, no deaths have been reported due to the cucumbers either, but again, consumers are asked to stay vigilant on what's in their crisper right now.
