Air fryers have changed the game for people who love crisp, crunchy food but want a healthier option than deep-frying in pools of oil. But with cooking functions beyond just air frying, like baking, roasting, and reheating, they can also stand in for other appliances, streamlining your meal prep process and making it easier to clean your air fryer. If you’re cooking for one or two people, a small or standard air fryer suffices, but if you’re preparing food for a family, a large-capacity air fryer saves you from having to cook one batch after another for a single meal.

We've tested nearly 100 air fryers over the years. Our tests have included the best large-capacity air fryers on the market, including dual-basket and combination air fryer toaster ovens. These picks simplify cooking healthy weeknight meals for the family or holiday appetizers for a crowd.

Pros
  • It’s a cinch to use and clean, it performs well, and it’s quiet.

Cons
  • Having a tray versus a basket isn’t ideal.

Coming out as our overall winner, this air fryer by Instant Pot pairs good performance with a reasonable price. It scored high in the ease of use category, and we noted that “a beginner would have no problem using this machine with what is provided.” We also liked the straightforward, easily operated display. While the food is cooking, you won’t be disturbed by loud whirrings since the air fryer does not give off much sound from the fan. Since this appliance has seven cooking functions, it's easy to make air fryer recipes, including an air fryer sweet potato or rotisserie chicken (the appliance comes with a rotisserie spit, forks, fetch tool, and basket)

Since this air fryer uses a cooking tray rather than a basket, it can be trickier to hold and handle. “It's a little more difficult to shift things around because you don't want them to fall off the tray,” we said. Instead, use your hands or kitchen tongs to flip your food and a dish towel or heatproof oven mitts when accessing the tray. But in the grand scheme, it’s a low-hassle air fryer, especially considering that everything has a nonstick coating for easy cleanup and most parts are dishwasher-safe.

Capacity: 10 quarts | Dimensions: 7 x 13.23 x 14.37 inches | Temperature Range: 95°F to 400°F | Functions: Air fry, broil, bake, roast, dehydrate, reheat, and rotisserie

Pros
  • This dual air fryer is versatile, roomy, and has an easy-to-use control panel.

Cons
  • Cooking two different types of food in the dual baskets can be challenging.

The Beautiful by Drew Barrymore 9-Quart TriZone Air Fryer is one of the most versatile large-capacity air fryers we tested. "It's not just for air frying. It has multiple cooking functions, plus a button for reheating food," we said. This air fryer has a generous 9-quart capacity and six cooking functions. The most unique feature of this air fryer is its ability to cook two different foods at once using the individual 4.5-quart capacity cooking zones. During our tests, we found that both zones evenly regulated heat and produced mostly equal cooking results. On a day-to-day basis, we found that this air fryer works best with the full 9-quart basket to cook one larger meal at a time.

In our tests, we liked this model's modern aesthetics and intuitive and easy-to-use display panel. We found the beep that signals the end of cooking times quite helpful for busy cooks. Our fries came out perfectly crisp during multiple rounds of testing, and our chicken wings were cooked to an even temperature. A final note: We liked how easy it was to clean the inside of this air fryer.

Capacity: 9 quarts | Dimensions: 18.70 x 16.33 x 14.37 inches | Temperature Range: 90°F to 450°F | Functions: Air fry, roast, reheat, dehydrate, bake, or broil

Philips Premium Airfryer XXL

Pros
  • It has a thoughtful, user-friendly design and fat-removal technology.

Cons
  • Cleaning isn’t as convenient as other options.

This air fryer received a perfect score for its design. We liked the spacious basket for fitting big batches of food. “The basket's handle was comfortable to use while holding and shaking. It felt easy to keep your hands away from the hot inner basket, as there is enough space between it and the handle,” we said. We also like that the digital controls on this air fryer are clear to read and understand.

One of the benefits of all air fryers is that you can use less oil while cooking, but this model takes it a step further with its “fat removal technology” designed to extract and capture excess fat from food. Unfortunately, there are no special features besides that and only five functions. We also noted that this air fryer isn’t easy to clean since the crisper plate isn’t nonstick or dishwasher-safe.

Capacity: 7 quarts | Dimensions: 15.55 x 15.55 x 15.67 inches | Temperature Range: 175°F to 400°F | Functions: Fry, bake, grill, roast, and reheat

Pros
  • This XL dual-basket air fryer allows for cooking two different dishes at once.

Cons
  • The temperature control is locked at preset intervals, which allows for slightly less control.

Slightly larger than the 8-quart Ninja Foodi Air Fryer we tested, this 10-quart dual-basket air fryer is a great multitasker in the kitchen. This air fryer has six versatile cooking programs, including air frying, air broiling, roasting, and dehydrating. During our tests, we found that the temperature between both 5-quart cooking zones largely stayed within 10°F of one other when cooking the same type of food and cooking preset, allowing for even cooking results. Given its large size and footprint, we think this model would be best for a 2- to 4-person household that plans to regularly use their air fryer to cook low-fat meals with two or more components, like a protein and a veggie side.

Though there is no preheat function on this air fryer, we liked the "Match Cook" function, which allowed us to simultaneously cook two portions of the same type of food at equal temperatures. We found the basket sizes to be slightly small for baking big batches of sweets and the temperature range a bit too high for dehydrating foods, but we'd recommend this model for simple everyday cooking, roasting, and broiling tasks.

Capacity: 10 quarts | Dimensions: 13.9 x 17.1 x 12.8 inches | Temperature Range: Up to 450°F | Functions: Air fry, air broil, roast, bake, reheat, and dehydrate

Pros
  • It has 1800 watts of power, 10 cooking functions, and can fit many foods other models can’t.

Cons
  • Because of its strong heat, you need to keep an eye on your food to prevent overcooking it.

With a 19-quart capacity, this is one massive air fryer toaster oven. You can fit a 12-inch pizza, an entire chicken, or six slices of bread inside, making it particularly suitable for large families. On top of that, this appliance can handle 10 different cooking functions, so even if it takes up more space on your countertop, it can replace multiple kitchen appliances.

Since the display is not backlit, we noted that “any user with vision issues might have greater difficulty reading.” But this is offset by the fact that the display has a large font. Another caveat with this air fryer toaster oven is its almost too-powerful cooking performance. “It is very strong, so food would need to be checked frequently and begin with less cooking time than you might think you need,” we said. Once you get the hang of this learning curve, you’ll appreciate the fast cooking times.

Capacity: 19 quarts | Dimensions: 15.75 x 16.54 x 13.9 inches | Temperature Range: 85°F to 450°F | Functions: Air fry, broil, bake, roast, dehydrate, reheat, rotisserie, toast, warm, and convection

How We Tested Large Capacity Air Fryers

Fries in the Ninja DZ401 Foodi 10 Quart 6-in-1 DualZone XL 2 Basket Air Fryer baskets

Food & Wine / Will Dickey

To find the best air fryers, we frequently test the newest models against our tried-and-true winners. We have put the winning models through rigorous rounds of testing, from air fryer staples (like making fries, toast, and cookies), to more nuanced and complex tests (like cornbread and entire chickens). Here are some of the qualities we looked for:

  • Versatility: To see how well the air fryers handled a variety of foods, we tested them by cooking dishes like frozen fries, fresh fries, Brussels sprouts, and chicken wings. During these tests, we noted the texture and doneness of the cooked food. We want to see crisp, even, well-cooking (and not overdone) results.
  • Capacity: For a large-capacity air fryer, we want, of course, a large surface area to be able to feed an entire table full of mouths. We looked to see how many, much, or big certain ingredients could fit inside the air fryer while still cooking evenly.
  • Ease of Cleaning: We also assessed how easy it was to clean the appliance between tests. We then rated each air fryer based on ease of use, performance, design, ease of cleaning, and value. We gave a score from 1 to 5 in each of these categories.

Factors to Consider

Single or Double Basket vs. Tray

Some air fryers have a single basket or tray while others have dual baskets. The former is useful if you like cooking larger portions of one thing or don’t mind batch-cooking separate items. The latter is great if you prefer to cook multiple types of food and are okay with sacrificing cooking capacity. There are also air fryer combos that double as another appliance like an air fryer toaster oven or an air fryer pressure cooker. These have even more cooking functions than a standard air fryer.

Capacity

Since the average air fryer falls between 3 and 6 quarts, we consider models with a capacity of 6 quarts and above as large-capacity air fryers. When deciding what size of air fryer you want, you should keep in mind how many people you’re feeding regularly or will be serving if you tend to host often. (If you've already got a lot of high-capacity kitchen appliances, then you want to go bigger). A family of four could make do with a 6-quart capacity, but with more people than that, you may want to look for something larger. It also helps to factor in the dimensions of the air fryer so you can see if you have enough space on your countertop to accommodate the appliance.

Temperature Range

A good air fryer will have a wide temperature range, allowing for a greater variety of cooking methods, from dehydrating to broiling. The high end for most air fryers is around 400 or 450 degrees Fahrenheit, while the low end can differ quite a bit. For example, of the appliances on this list, the lowest temperature ranges from 70 to 175 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re not sure what temperatures you might need in the future, you can always just look at what cooking functions the appliance has to get an idea of how much you can or can’t do.

Extra Features

Standard air fryers will have customizable settings for temperature and cooking time. Past that, you get into preset cooking programs for specific dishes (French fries, chicken, and fish are common ones). When these settings are available, you can just touch a button and let the appliance adjust to the right temperature and cook time for that food. Some dual-basket air fryers also have settings that synchronize the temperature and time between both sides so that two different programs finish at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the largest air fryer capacity?

Many large air fryers are in the 7- to 8-quart range, but you can find some that go up to 10, 12, or even over 20 quarts. Many extra-large air fryers double as toaster ovens or ovens, which is why there can be such a big difference in their size. Remember, that while a larger cooking capacity is great, you also have to be realistic about how much counter or cabinet space you have to store the appliance.

  • What size of air fryer do you need for a family of six?

If you’re cooking for a family of six, a 7- or 8-quart air fryer should work just fine. Whether or not you need to cook food in batches will depend on what you’re cooking and the size of your portions. The capacity of an air fryer is what really matters when thinking of what size you need rather than its dimensions since that gives you a better idea of cooking space.

  • What size of air fryer do you need to cook a whole chicken?

Air fryers with a capacity of 6 quarts or more should be able to cook a whole chicken as long as the cooking basket or the position of the cooking tray offers enough depth to fit the bird inside.

Other Large Capacity Air Fryers We Tested

Ninja DZ071 Foodi FlexBasket Air Fryer ($179 at Amazon)

We initially liked the design of this 8-quart dual-basket-style air fryer, which makes it easy to cook two different dishes at once. We appreciated the "Smart Finish” feature that syncs the cooking time of both baskets even with different temperatures and the "Match Cook" feature which cooks the same food in both baskets. However, we noticed some temperature accuracy issues and found the Ninja Foodi 10 Quart 6-in-1 DualZone XL 2-Basket Air Fryer in our list above to be the better large-capacity air fryer.

TaoTronics Air Fryer 011 ($90 at TaoTronics)

One of the most affordable air fryers previously included on our list, the TaoTronics offers high-level performance at a low price. This air fryer has a roomy cooking basket, a glass cooking window, and a built-in interior light to monitor cooking. It's also almost completely silent. In our tests of a similar (now discontinued model), we called this air fryer "a steal,” noting its many cooking presets, sleek display panel, and consistent performance. Unfortunately, since we wrapped our tests, this model has been discontinued and is no longer available.
