Enjoying coffee isn’t just about getting the necessary caffeine jolt in the morning — it’s about the whole ritual surrounding the sip. Several key factors come into play to make our morning coffee perfect, from choosing the right beans to using the best coffee maker to brew it. Another key component to the whole equation is using the right coffee mug.

The best coffee mugs can actually make your brew taste better. To find the perfect vessel worthy of a place next to your go-to French press or espresso machine, we tested 15 popular mugs. We focused on mugs that keep drinks well-insulated, feel comfortable to hold, and look great on the counter. If you're looking for the best coffee gift, your search ends here. Here's our list of the best coffee mugs, according to our highly caffeinated tests.

Best Everyday Coffee Mugs

Year & Day Mugs, Set of 4

Year & Day Mugs, Set of 4
PHOTO: Year & Day
Pros
  • These coffee mugs are available in gorgeous colors, including sky blue, mustard yellow, and soft blush.

Cons
  • Because of their shape and thicker design, these mugs aren’t easy to stack, so they’ll take up more room in your cabinet.

When Year & Day set out to make a coffee mug, the focus was on quality, heat retention, and hand feel — and boy did they achieve it. The minimalistic dishware company is a favorite here at Food & Wine (we named their pasta bowls some of the best), thanks to their quality Portuguese ceramics material and durable, straightforward design. These mugs are simple — think the best (and chicest) diner mug you’ve ever come across, with a generous 12-ounce capacity and durable semi-matte glaze finish that comes in gorgeous shades.

During our testing, these mugs became a fast favorite, thanks in large part to the perfection of their shape. The handle is roomy, allowing four fingers to nestle in for a secure and cozy grip. The 4-inch height means they fit a slightly above-average amount of coffee (fewer refills!), while the tapered base and thick walls allow for superior heat retention. We were also impressed by how easy these mugs were to clean. Even though they were dishwasher safe, they were just as easy to wipe clean with a sponge and dish soap and resisted staining well, even if we let the coffee sit around for a few hours. Their simple aesthetic is timeless and melded easily with our kitchen style and existing mug collection.

Best Splurge

Haand Short Mug

Haand 10oz Short Mug

Pros
  • Because of their stout shape, these mugs have a lower center of gravity, meaning they’re harder to knock over or spill than your average design.

Cons
  • At $48 each, these are an investment piece, and the cost may be prohibitive if you need to start an entire collection from scratch.

Everyone has their “thing” they like to splurge on — and if yours is coffee mugs, then this sweet pick from Haand is the perfect new addition to your collection. Handmade in North Carolina from lead-free white porcelain, these compact mugs were modeled after the iconic tin camping mug with the same sturdy shape. Each 10-ounce cup features a roomy handle and wide mouth and comes in unique shades, including Marine (a bold navy-meets-green) and Turmeric (a zesty speckled yellow).

While the $48 price tag may be hefty, we were quickly impressed by Haand’s mugs during testing. The squat shape allowed our hands to “hug” the mug, which made us feel cozy and comforted. The wide mouth allowed maximum flavor and aroma to escape while drinking, and we found the 10-ounce capacity to be the perfect Goldilocks volume for everyday sips. The handmade quality of these mugs shone through in their shape and glazing. Slight imperfections and nuances made us feel like we scored a one-of-a-kind piece of art, transforming our daily coffee ritual into something truly memorable.

Best Coffee Mugs for Gifting

Jono Pandolfi Mug

Jono Pandolfi Mug

Pros
  • Of all the stoneware mugs we tested, these had the thickest wall, making them adept at heat retention and great for slow sippers.

Cons
  • The thick walls of this mug don’t taper at the lip, so your first few sips can feel clunky and awkward before you get used to the shape.

Looking to spoil the food-obsessed person on your holiday shopping list? Snag one of these Jono Pandolfi coffee mugs to sip like the culinary greats. The iconic brand is responsible for creating stoneware dinnerware for some of the most well-known restaurants in the business (including Gramercy Tavern and Lilia), so this is the next best thing to sitting down for a cappuccino with Jean-Georges Vongerichten himself.

The brand's mug is just as impressive. During testing, we fell hard for the shape, which was tall and thick but not too wide. We could easily hold the mug with one hand (great for multitasking), and the handle comfortably fits two to three fingers for a stable and comfortable grip. The thick walls made for excellent heat retention and the glaze meant it was easy to rinse the mugs clean without any residual staining. These mugs are handmade in nature, so they’ll vary slightly in shape, color, and glaze from piece to piece. Perfectionists be warned.

Material: Stoneware | Capacity: 12 ounces | Microwave-safe: Yes | Dishwasher-safe: Yes

Pros
  • These handmade mugs are chunky, durable, and rustic. They’ve been an editor favorite for years here at Food & Wine.

Cons
  • While not necessarily con, these mugs are handmade and glazed, so slight variations in color and shape can occur.

If you prefer your coffee mugs to appear as if they’re straight out of the kiln, look no further than East Fork’s iconic mug. Sturdy and solid with a simple rustic aesthetic, this timeless design has a distinctive chunky handle and two-tone glaze that harkens back to a simpler time (maybe when coffee was the only thing on your weekend to-do list?). Each piece is handmade and hand-glazed in the brand's North Carolina factory, so you know you’re getting a mug made with a lot of TLC.

East Fork is a unanimous favorite among our staff, and testing these mugs out made it easy to see why. Their chunky shape feels cozy, with thick sides that help to retain heat and a full handle that guarantees a secure grip, even as you’re walking around. The lip of the mug has a natural shape, making it easy to sip your chosen beverage without slurping or burning your tongue on a too-hot gulp. Above all, though, is the aesthetic. These mugs won us over with their back-to-basics appeal — they’re essentially the mugs we wish we could create in pottery class. Choose from a selection of “core” colors (such as creamy Panna Cotta or rich Black Mountain) or shop seasonal releases — but hit “add to cart” quickly, as they tend to go fast.

Editor’s Note: Located in Western North Carolina, the East Fork team and their factory were recently impacted by Hurricane Helene. The brand is back up and running with occasional shipping delays, but many in their community are still rebuilding. East Fork is donating 5% of every purchase to relief organizations, including Nanostead, Be Well AVL, and Umoja.

Material: Stoneware | Capacity: 12 ounces | Microwave-safe: Yes | Dishwasher-safe: Yes

Pros
  • These coffee mugs coordinate aesthetically with a slew of other Le Creuset items, so you can easily “brand” your dinner party from start to finish with the same look.

Cons
  • Compared to some of the other mugs on our list, these didn’t keep our coffee as hot.

Nothing impresses fellow food lovers like catching a glimpse of Le Creuset pieces on the table, whether that’s their signature Dutch oven during dinner or their chic Vancouver mug over dessert. The latter easily won a spot on our list of the best coffee mugs as a hosting essential, thanks to its unfussy aesthetic that feels special enough to break out when guests arrive. Like all Le Creuset stoneware, the Vancouver mug is as durable as it gets, with a nonstick surface that resists scratches and stains and an impressive oven-safe temperature of up to 500°F.

While testing these mugs, we were immediately impressed by the combination of their visual and functional appeal. The Vancouver is a beautiful mug — it was one of the prettiest we tested, especially because of the glaze colors. It performed well too, with a tall, easy-to-hold shape that felt weighty and comfortable. The generous 14-ounce capacity allowed it to hold a double serving of coffee or an impressively fluffy cappuccino, and we enjoyed how easy it was to clean these both by hand and in the dishwasher. While our coffee didn’t stay as warm in these mugs as in others, the difference wasn’t all that bothersome, and the aesthetic appeal more than made up for that fault.

Material: Stoneware | Capacity: 14 ounces | Microwave-safe: Yes | Dishwasher-safe: Yes

Pros
  • These petite mugs are easy to stack and take up very little space, so they’re a great option if you don’t have a lot of extra cabinet room to dedicate to storing your coffee mugs.

Cons
  • These cups only hold 6.8 ounces, making them a better option for espresso-based drinks than traditional drip coffee.

Sleek and streamlined, you’ll notice right away that these mugs are missing one classic feature: a handle. Designed specifically for a full-hand hold, Fable’s Cappucino Cups are slightly more petite than other mugs on our list, but no less stylish. A smooth, soft glaze covers ¾ of the vessel, leaving the bottle portion as exposed stoneware for an earthy look (and easy grip). The thick walls of the cup keep drinks piping hot while you sip, but still protect your hand from excess heat as you hold it.

During testing, we quickly found that these little mugs filled a hole in our coffee mug collection we didn’t even know existed. Larger than an espresso cup but smaller than a standard mug, Fable’s 6.8-ounce Cappucino Cups are ideal for shorter espresso-based drinks. We found these mugs to be incredibly sturdy, and they held up well to all tests of durability, whether a quick zap in the microwave, a run through the dishwasher, or a scrub by hand. Their petite, seamless size means they’ll require less space.

Pros
  • With a temperature range between 120 and 145° finding (and maintaining) your perfect temperature is a cinch.

Cons
  • Because this is a piece of tech, it’s far and away the priciest pick on our list. While a great investment for a certain type of sipper, it won’t be worthwhile for everyone.

Let’s be honest: Enjoying a hot cup of coffee before the day kicks off sounds dreamy — and sometimes, it can be just that…a dream. For all those moments where life gets in the way of a warm (or even lukewarm) beverage, there’s Ember. This smart mug is the first of its kind, designed to maintain the temperature of your beverage for up to 80 minutes on a full charge (or all day, when set on the coaster). It’s the ideal pick for busy parents or anyone constantly putting down their cappuccino only to find it cold hours later.

While the shape and size of this mug are standard (though functional, nonetheless), the tech is what impressed us during testing. Ember’s mug and its corresponding mug warmer kept our coffee at the perfect temperature for over an hour, all without the exterior of the mug itself getting hot. The app to control the cup and maintain the temperature was surprisingly simple and fun. While this mug requires a gentler touch than others on our list (don’t get the tech components wet), it’s a small price for an always-warm cup of coffee.

Material: Stainless steel | Capacity: 10 ounces | Microwave-safe: No | Dishwasher-safe: No

Pros
  • This mug has a splash guard, so you won’t have to worry about ruining your shirt during your morning commute.

Cons
  • The ceramic coating that lines the interior of this mug can be delicate, so you’ll want to wash it gently and avoid using metal utensils (like spoons or metal straws).

Many of us take our coffee on the go, but finding a great travel coffee mug can be difficult. You need something that maintains temperature well, doesn’t leak, and fits easily in a bag or car cup holder. If that sounds like a tall order, that’s because it is — but Fellow’s Carter Move Mug rises to the challenge. The double-wall vacuum stainless steel body retains heat for 12 hours (or stays cold for 24), and the interior is lined with a ceramic coating to help maintain the flavor purity, with none of the metallic or copper coffee taste some travel mugs can impart.

While testing this mug, there was not a feature we didn’t like. The size of the 16-ounce mug was generous but still comfortable to tote around, fitting seamlessly in our bags and car. It kept our coffee piping hot for hours while the outside of the mug was still cool and was virtually leak-proof, even when stored horizontally on the floor during an entire flight. Even better, this piece comes with loads of extras to make the sipping experience even more elite, including a spill guard clip-in insert and add-ons like a straw lid, carry lid, and optional personalization.

Material: Ceramic, stainless steel, BPA-free plastic | Capacity: 16 ounces | Microwave-safe: No | Dishwasher-safe: Yes

Pros
  • You can feel the handmade texture on the body of this mug, resulting in small grooves or bumps that make the cup easier to hold.

Cons
  • The first few times we used this mug, we could detect a slight flavor from the glaze, though it dissipated after a while.

What started as a small upstate New York shop has since ballooned into a well-respected tabletop brand with a focus on minimalistic and sleek offerings, including the forever-classic Atelier Mug. Made without handles, this piece is hefty enough to house your morning cup of brew, but could just as easily flex to serve up sparkling water or an evening hot toddy. The durable yet delicate design is lightweight yet substantial with slightly uneven edges and a tapered bottom that make it easy to hold and sturdy at rest.

Though drinking coffee out of a handleless mug was new, we were quickly impressed by how natural this design made it feel. The mug never got too hot to handle, and the gently tapered shape was natural and comfortable. Though it doesn’t come in any other glaze colors, the soft white and exposed stone base of this design easily paired with our existing dishware collection, and we loved the sleek and minimalist appeal.

Material: Stoneware | Capacity: 12 ounces | Microwave-safe: Yes | Dishwasher-safe: Yes

Pros
  • The walls of this mug are doubled up, so it easily maintains the ideal drink temperature for longer.

Cons
  • Because they’re made from glass, these mugs show marks, etchings, and fingerprints more than a ceramic or stoneware style would.

A glass coffee mug is ideal for seeing the perfect crema on top of your espresso shot or the velvety foam finishing your cappuccino. Sipping from one is way less precious than you think. Our favorite pick, Zwilling’s Sorrento Plus Mug, is double-walled for added heat retention and made from durable borosilicate glass.

During testing, we liked the sleek appeal of this mug, which was matched effortlessly by its functionality. The roomy handle is wide and comfortable, allowing us to easily fit our fingers inside for a hug-like hold on the mug. The lip of the vessel was thick but easy to sip from, and the double-wall insulation ensured that our beverages stayed at the right temperature longer than expected. The piece was easy to clean, but our one gripe was that it was quicker to show marks, fingerprints, and etching than the ceramic or stoneware options on our list. It’s not a deal breaker if you love the purist look of this piece, but it's something to consider.

Our Favorite Coffee Mugs

We tested 15 coffee mugs in our quest for the best, but the number one spot went to Year & Day’s Mugs. These basic but much better mugs had everything we could want in a design, including a durable body, an easy-hold handle, beautiful glaze options, and coordinating dishware. They’re the ideal pick for anyone kicking off a coffee mug collection in style.

How We Tested Coffee Mugs

  • We tested 15 coffee mugs that differed in material, capacity, and shape. Some pieces were made from stoneware or porcelain, others of glass or stainless steel. Many were handmade and had unique subtle differences between each piece, while others touted extras, like a secure travel lid or next-level technology.
  • Each coffee mug was assessed on different elements and features, including the design, size, material, and care.
  • We used each mug several times throughout testing, making sure to vary the types of drinks consumed and allowing several to sit for up to 20 minutes to gauge how each mug retained heat.
  • Afterward, each piece was cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions and assessed for residual stains or smells.

What We Looked For

Material

When shopping for the best coffee mug, pay attention to the type of material the piece is made of and how that contributes to its functionality and appearance. During our testing, we noted the quality and color of the glaze on any stoneware pieces, and whether the material chipped easily or showed signs of wear, like etching or staining. The same went for other materials in our mug lineup, such as glass and stainless steel. Each material was also rated for heat retention, including how warm it kept our beverages (and for how long) and whether it got too hot to hold on the exterior.

  • Stainless steel mugs are the most durable but can be harder to handle if they don’t have a heat-resistant handle or some sort of sleeve, and they’re not microwave-safe if your beverage needs a fast reheat. They can also impart off-flavors.
  • Ceramic mugs do a good job of retaining heat and tend to be comfortable in the hand. They can chip or crack if mishandled, but most are both dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe.
  • Glass will give you the cleanest taste of any coffee mug, but they can be delicate and easily chip or break, so often not ideal for everyday use.
  • Plastic composites are nearly indestructible but will do the poorest job of retaining heat, and many are not microwave-safe.

Size

Everyone prefers a different size of coffee, so shopping for a mug with that attribute in mind is a wholly personal process. During our testing, we didn’t dock points if one mug was smaller than another. Still, we factored size into the equation, noting where an extra-large capacity made it easier to skip going back to the kitchen for refills or whether a smaller cup was better suited for espresso drinks instead of drip coffee.

Handle

When choosing the best coffee mug, how it feels in hand is important. If you can, aim to hold any mugs you’re considering in your hand before purchasing to ensure they feel comfortable. During our testing, we paid close attention to the feel of each piece, especially where the handle of the mug came into play. We noted how many fingers could easily hold onto the handle and whether the handle felt secure and able to withstand the weight of the rest of the mug. For any mugs we tested without handles, we noted how easy the mug was to hold and if our hands got too hot.

Care

Everyone has experienced a stained coffee cup once or twice, and the residual mess can make it feel like every cup is tainted. During testing, we paid special attention to the care each mug required, noting whether the pieces were dishwasher safe or required hand washing. We also looked for excessive signs of wear, including scratching from metal silverware, stains or residual odors from our drinks, and any chips or breakage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the best heat-insulating material for coffee mugs?

Mugs made of stainless steel with a double wall will retain heat for the longest time. That said, if you’re sipping your coffee at home, you can get away with a stoneware or ceramic vessel, with thick walls that will keep your sip hot for a decent amount of time. If you struggle to drink your coffee while hot, you can look into purchasing a tech gadget designed to maintain temperature for up to an hour or more.

  • Does the material of a coffee mug affect the taste of coffee?

Coffee is acidic, so you do run the risk of some materials leeching flavor notes into your sip if allowed to sit for too long. This happens most frequently with plastic or metal like stainless steel, which can impart a metallic taste. To avoid this entirely, look for a glazed ceramic interior, which will allow the flavor of your sip to remain neutral.

  • How many ounces are in a standard coffee mug?

An 8- to 10-ounce capacity is standard for most coffee mugs, though some go up to 12 ounces or more. Most travel mugs clock in at 16 ounces. When shopping for a mug size, consider the average amount of coffee or tea you drink in one sitting and aim for that — anything too large and your drink will turn cold prematurely.

  • How do you get coffee stains out of mugs?

As a rule of thumb, wash your coffee mug immediately after use to avoid any staining or rings. To remove coffee stains, scrub the interior with a paste made from baking soda and water or vinegar, which usually works well to remove any lingering residue.

  • Should I put my coffee mugs in the dishwasher?

While most coffee mugs are dishwasher safe, you should always clean your mug according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Some mugs, like delicate porcelain or those with unique detailing, may be too fragile to wash in the dishwasher.

  • What’s the best way to store coffee mugs?

Coffee mugs can be stored in your cabinet, on top of your counter at a coffee bar, or hanging off a mug “tree” near your machine. When choosing how to store your coffee mugs, consider the most effective use of space and avoid stacking any mugs whose lips may be more fragile and thus susceptible to chipping.

Other Coffee Mugs We Tested

While the 10 coffee mugs that earned a spot on our list were the best, we still found several strong contenders throughout our testing. The mugs below are still quality options for your kitchen, falling short in just one or two testing categories that prevented them from making our best list. Here’s what stood out — and where they could have done better:

Made In Coffee Mugs, Set of 4 ($49 at Amazon)

Similar to something you’d see at a high-end restaurant, these Made In coffee mugs are made from vitrified china, which is beloved for its simple beauty and longevity. While we were impressed by the durability and stackability of these mugs, they felt smaller than other 12-ounce mugs on our list and stained easily, requiring extra scrubbing.

Our Place Night & Day Mugs ($65 at Our Place)

With a wide sturdy base and generous handle, these Our Place mugs won high praise during our testing for their classic yet contemporary shape. These weren’t the most comfortable to hold, and the unglazed lip of the cup felt strangely gritty to sip from while enjoying our coffee.
