The 8 Best Cereal Bowls, According to Our Editors

Our favorites include oversized picks and stackable sets.

We're as picky about our cereal bowls as we are about the best pasta bowls. The best cereal bowls should be the proper depth to help you achieve a proper milk-to-cereal ratio. They should also be stackable to fit into your kitchen cabinets and always (always!) dishwasher-safe.

“As a cereal lover, I've found that the vessel is not as important as the vibe. The prettier your bowl is, the better it will taste. An aesthetic choice that suits your style will heighten the moment and turn a simple breakfast into a five-star experience," says Three Wishes Cereal co-founder Margaret Wishingrad.

To help make your next breakfast much better, we asked our writers and editors to share their go-to cereal bowls based on months of testing and using them for grain bowls, oats, leftover curry, fresh fruit, and more.

When it comes to cereal bowls that will stand the test of time, it doesn’t get any better than this stylish set. They’re made from durable porcelain and are lightly stretched during production for a slightly organic form that keeps them from feeling too perfect. A near 6-inch depth means there’s plenty of room for your favorite mix, while a petite 3-inch diameter ensures they stack beautifully and don’t take up too much room in your cabinets.

Available in two neutral hues (white or ivory) and a set of four or eight, they’re the ideal basic but better pick for a cereal bowl that will never go out of style. They’re also part of a larger dishware collection at West Elm, so you can snag everything from dinnerware to pasta bowls if you want a comprehensive set.

Best Oversized Cereal Bowls

Deliciously deep and generously oversized, West Elm’s Kaloh stoneware cereal bowls are the ideal pick if your breakfast appetite runs large. Available in a set of four or eight, they come in neutral hues, so they’re easy to pair with your existing collection. Do you love their look? Spring for dishware from the whole line, created for West Elm by London-based designer Aaron Probyn, for a seamless tablescape.

"At first glance, you wouldn't think this bowl could hold much food, but it's deep and can fit an entire meal. The interior has a smooth polish that's easy to clean. The exterior has a minimal, stoneware texture that feels homey in the best way," says writer Dillon Evans.

"These will fit 28 fluid ounces, so whatever your cereal style — lots of milk, few flakes; lots of flakes, a little milk — they can meet you there. Keep in mind that the walls of these bowls are especially high (3.25 inches, to be exact), so while they’ll hold an enormous amount of cereal, they’ll also take up more room in your cabinets, especially if stacked vertically. These bowls get very hot in the microwave and should be removed with a towel or oven mitt," Evans says.

When space is of the essence, every inch of cabinet space counts and you’ll want to look for stackable glassware and nesting dishware. That’s where these practical and slightly smaller Anthropologie cereal bowls come in. A unique shape allows them to nest seamlessly atop one another, creating a sturdy and compact tower that remains at the ready when your morning alarm goes off.

"I found out about these best-selling latte bowls years ago when I worked at Anthropologie, and I still love them. They're a generous size for cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, snacks, and more, and they come in gorgeous colors," says commerce editor Mary Claire Lagroue.

With plenty of colors to choose from, these glazed stoneware cereal bowls are retro without feeling kitschy, making them perfect for everyone’s favorite kid-like breakfast food.

Best Modern Cereal Bowls

These porcelain cereal bowls have straighter sides than most options on our list, giving them a fresh and sleek silhouette that’s great for anyone with a flair for modern decor. The unique shape also means they are nearly the same diameter from lip to base, so you’ll gain more overall capacity without an oversized bowl (translation: more cereal for you).

These clean and simple bowls are a favorite of testing editor Jennifer Zyman. "I love these cereal bowls. They are modern and elegant enough to be used at any meal. I eat leftover Japanese curry and rice out of these regularly. It is also a nice portion size," she says.

There are so many things to love about this set of bowls from Duoluv. For starters, the price point is beyond reasonable, costing just under $10 for a set of four. Even better, these beauties aren’t made of plastic — instead, they’re designed using an innovative organic wheat straw fiber that’s non-toxic, odorless, and environmentally friendly. The makeup also means that they’re lightweight and virtually indestructible, so they’re a great option for households with young children.

Each set of four comes in an assortment of pastel colors and is available in two different sizes, 30 ounces and 24 ounces, which is our preference for the perfect milk-to-cereal ratio. Shape-wise, they’re uniform and accessible, with a generous wide rim that makes it easy to pile fruit or other yummy extras onto your bowl of cereal.

Brad Leone X Jono Pandolfi Cereal Bowl

Jono Pandolfi is a big name in dinnerware, especially when it comes to restaurant-worthy construction and style (we even named them in our list of the best stoneware dinnerware sets), so it makes sense that they’d create a covetable cereal bowl. This piece, which is designed in collaboration with chef Brad Leone, features the brand’s signature neutral stoneware exterior with a selection of gorgeous glazes coating the inside.

At $36 a piece, this cereal bowl is pricey — but the quality design and perfect shape make it a worthy splurge. A generous foot at the base adds stability and the thick stoneware makeup retains temperature (aka your cool milk) just a bit longer than other materials. The 5.75-inch width allows it to cradle the cereal of your choice just so, while also ensuring it’s versatile enough to flex as an ice cream bowl or soup bowl.

Best Small Cereal Bowls

Not everyone thinks of cereal as their main meal at breakfast. For some, it’s simply a side dish next to yogurt recipes or an appetizer to a larger meal of waffles, eggs, or buttermilk pancakes. If that sounds like you, chances are you’ll want a more petite cereal bowl to suit your needs. Enter Year & Day’s Small Bowls, which are perfectly sized for smaller portions of the good stuff so you waste not and want not.

Like the rest of their dishware, Year & Day’s Small Bowls are made in Portugal using locally sourced clay and finished with a durable semi-matte glaze (in eight of-the-moment hues) that won’t fade or scuff over time. While they’re only 2.8 inches tall, they have a generously wide 6-inch diameter, so you can pile your cereal high with add-ons to your heart’s content.

The ratio of these bowls is just right, with a 5.5-inch diameter and 2.25-inch height that allows you to pour out generous portions without constantly refilling your cereal bowl. The design is made from high-fired porcelain for extra durability and is designed by Williams Sonoma for use in commercial-grade kitchens, so you know these can handle whatever you or your family throw at ‘em.

Our Favorite Cereal Bowl

Our pick for the best overall cereal bowl is the West Elm Organic Porcelain Cereal Bowl Set. These bowls are made from durable porcelain and lightly stretched during production for a slightly organic form that keeps them from feeling too perfect. With a versatile 22.8-ounce capacity, these bowls are the ideal size for cereal or soup. We love that they're dishwasher-safe.

What to Look For

Durability

When shopping for cereal bowls, one of the most important things to consider is your chosen style’s durability. Like any piece of dishware, you want to make sure your bowls can stand up to daily wear and tear, so selecting your material wisely is important. Most of the cereal bowls on our list are made of either stoneware or porcelain, both of which are known to hold their own against mild drops, clinks, and accidents. That being said, for a truly indestructible cereal bowl, consider going with an option made of melamine or Planta, like two of the picks on our list.

Design

While the satisfaction of a great bowl of cereal can’t be overstated, it’s also important to consider what else your chosen cereal bowl can be used for. Oftentimes, bowls of that size and shape make great vessels for other eats on the menu, such as ice cream, soup, chili, and yogurt. If you’re looking to add versatility to your dinnerware collection, make sure to choose a cereal bowl that can flex between breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and dessert!).

“The perfect cereal bowl, to me, is all about depth and shape,” says Tom Binder, co-founder of The Real Cereal Company. “It should be deep enough to keep my cereal comfortably swimming in milk but shaped to make every scoop easy and satisfying, with a slightly wider rim."

Capacity

Great cereal bowls come in all shapes and sizes. While there is no standard capacity that’s considered “right” for a cereal bowl, most of the picks on our list average in capacity from 20 to 24 fluid ounces. Anything more than that (like the 28-ounce designs that made our list) can be considered “oversized,” while anything less than 20 ounces is commonly referred to as a small or mini cereal bowl.

Care

When shopping for the best cereal bowl for your needs, be realistic about your care requirements. If you’re not up for hand-washing a dish every morning before you head out to work, you’re probably going to want to shop for a style that is dishwasher-friendly. The good news? All of the picks on our list are, and generally, any dishware made of porcelain or stoneware should be good to wash in your dishwasher — but always read the care instructions first.
